Mount Komati

Between Machadodorp and Badplaas, Mpumalanga

This is a 2-day basecamp trail, laid out under the guidance of well-known trail developer Albert Bossert and are close to the popular Num-num trail. The accommodation is of a high standard and can accommodate a maximum of 20 people. The longer trail requires a fair degree of fitness.

16 people can be accommodated in two dorm chalets with four set of bunk beds in each. A further 4 can be accommodated in two more up market chalets with bedding include.

Amenities include kitchen, utensils, braai/lounge outside braai area, African boma and ablution block for all the guests to use and share.

The longer of the two trails is 15km and requires a fair degree of fitness. An alternative shorter route will soon be available. The route takes the hiker on an ascent of about 600m. It first of all traverses mountain grassland and then follows a path through indigenous bush along the bottom of a krans and then ascends briefly to the mountain summit. You then descend back to base again. The trail takes about 8 hours to complete.

The second trail is much shorter at only 4,5km long. However it should not be missed as it has some lovely patches of indigenous forest with beautiful waterfalls.

The forest is full of beautiful waterfalls and cascades

Care needs to be taken as it can be slippery under foot.

Views along the Komati valley are beautiful and should keep the camera happy.

Mist is common but give the trail a somewhat eerie feel

The owners are very interested in conservation. Along the path you may come across beautiful examples of flora and fauna.
